Attitude and Competence towards Folk Dancing of MAPEH Teachers in Northern Samar, Philippines

Abstract
Background: Education plays a crucial role in preserving the continuity of culture by transmitting cultural experiences, values, traditions, and customs from one generation to the next. Thus, teaching folk dances necessitates that MAPEH teachers possess the knowledge and skills required to effectively convey and uphold this cultural heritage.
Aims: This study aimed to find out the level of attitude of the teacher-respondents towards folk dancing and their competence towards folk dancing.
Method: A descriptive research design was utilized, involving 210 JHS MAPEH teachers in the province of Northern Samar. Data were gathered through modified survey questionnaire were content was validated by experts in the field then analyzed using descriptive statistics, weighted mean and frequencies.
Results: The study revealed a generally favorable attitude of MAPEH teachers towards folk dancing while their competence in folk dancing was described as moderately competent. The findings reveal that nearly half (47.62%) of the respondents demonstrated moderate competence, and 37.14% showed competence in understanding the nature and background of folk dancing.
Conclusion: The study highlights the necessity for ongoing training and workshops to elevate the competence level of the majority who are only moderately proficient. Further, teachers must continue reflecting an openness and appreciation for this cultural art form.
